What is AgentPay?

The payment layer for the autonomous AI economy

x402 AgentPay is a patent-pending HTTP payment protocol built for AI agents. When one agent needs a service from another — data, compute, content, analysis — it sends an HTTP request. If payment is required, the server returns a 402 Payment Required response with a USDC payment address and amount. The calling agent pays instantly on the Base blockchain, attaches the transaction proof, and retries the request. Access granted.

Why HTTP? Why not a smart contract?

Smart contracts require both parties to be on-chain and add complexity. AgentPay uses the standard HTTP 402 status code — already built into every web framework. Any API can become a paid service with a few lines of code. Any AI agent with a wallet can pay it. No SDK required, no gas surprises, no custodian.

How It Works

Agent Requests a Service

An AI agent sends a standard HTTP GET or POST request to a service endpoint — e.g. GET /api/analyze?data=xyz

Server Returns 402

If the service costs money, the server responds with HTTP 402 and a JSON payload: wallet address, USDC amount, and a unique payment ID.

Agent Pays On-Chain

The agent sends the exact USDC amount to the specified wallet on Base mainnet. This is a real blockchain transaction, settled in ~2 seconds.

Agent Retries with Proof

The agent attaches the transaction hash as a header (X-Payment-Hash) and retries the request. The server verifies on Basescan.

Access Granted

Payment confirmed, service delivered. The whole flow takes under 5 seconds. No human approved it. No invoice. No bank.
